Artist Statement

Statement
My paintings are inventions form my imagination and start where my mind, eyes, conscious and unconscious meet.
I start by sketching ideas that inspire my imagination and design them into a composition of my unusual visual reality. With pen and ink on 8x11 paper I sketch my ideas until I reach a satisfactory visual compositional solution. Transforming a blank canvas has always been a magic, challenging and exciting journey. My images in composition always seems to be in some state of magic and discovery. The magic begins by taking a visual idea and creating a composition that embraces my ideas on a blank surface and the creative discovery is building the painting with color one brush stroke after another until my idea meets my visual reality.
The last brush stroke of my finished painting is the stimulus to begin the journey of another.

Biography
When I was in 6th grade I won a competition to do the cover for the Christmas pageant. The size was 5 12 x 8- 12, vertical. I drew the driver sitting in a sleigh wearing a cap with ear flaps, not ear muffs. It was snowing of course. I thought the flaps looked neat.
A portion of the horses tail and rump showed just enough on the left in this vertical composition. The driver held the reins in his hands but was not in profile or sitting directly facing out of the drawing, and here is the best challenging thing about the drawing, it was done in 34 view. For an eleven year old I thought that was pretty darn challenging and something I was determined to accomplish. The school had a mimeograph machine where I had to trace over the original drawing on to blue print paper in order to make multiple prints. I remember being so mad cause my original drawing would by destroyed doing that. It was.

In the school library at Maugham were murals high up on the walls of conestoga wagons and pioneers walking across the prairie, a very impressive painting in sepia about 15 feet wide. The painterillustrator, Harvey Dunn, I didn’t have the faintest idea who he was, lived in Tenafly, my home town, and was a big time illustrator of western scenes I later found out. He probably donated them to the school. I’d be in the library to do research for a report but would always be looking at the paintings and wondering if I could do that some day. I was a dreamer and still am. Those paintings made a deep impression on my future career as professional illustrator and painter.

I’ve spent 50 plus years involved in the arts of painting, illustration and cartooning. Raised in Tenafly, N.J.I currently live in Lower Makefield, PA. I attended the University of Maryland but transferred after a year and a half to enter and graduate from The School of Visual Arts in NYC. After 2 years in the US military I won an All US Army world wide Art Contest award at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, I moved to Mexico City where I obtained an MFA painting from the University of the Americas an American University. Returning east from New Mexico I taught arts and crafts in Espanola Jr High for two years until The Record newspaper in Hackensack, N.J., hired me as an illustratorcartoonist and remained with the paper for 26 years. I moved to PA in 2001. I’ve had one man exhibitions in Mexico, New Mexico, Texas, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, as well as participating in many juried exhibitions locally and nationally, most recently one-person exhibitions at the Trenton City Museum in 2012 the Lawrenceville School, Lawrenceville, NJ in 2014 the Chapin School, Princeton, NJ, in 2015 and in 2016 the Pennswood Art Gallery in Newtown, PA. My work is included in private collections as well as the Newark Museum, Newark N.J., and The Billie Ireland Museum of Cartoon Art at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.
I was a past recipient of a NJSCA fellowship in painting 1986, and a volunteer Docent at the Princeton University Art Museum from 2004 to 2016. I am a current member of Trenton Artists Workshop Association TAWA, and also a founding member of the Artists of Yardley AOY PA....
